A historic medical breakthrough in Poland ❤️🇵🇱
Doctors just pulled off the unthinkable: they removed a patient’s liver, cut out a tumor while the organ was outside her body, and then successfully transplanted it back in. This isn’t a plot from a medical drama—it’s real life.
Experts at the Medical University of Warsaw (MUW) Clinical Center have performed Poland’s first-ever ex situ liver resection and autotransplantation. The 43-year-old patient was facing a massive tumor in a location that made traditional surgery or a standard transplant impossible. Conventional methods offered no hope.
That’s when the team, led by Professor Michał Grąt, stepped in to perform one of the most complex procedures in the world of surgery. The operation lasted 11 hours. For nearly five of those hours, the liver was completely outside the patient’s body while surgeons meticulously removed the cancer. This high-stakes procedure carries an immense risk of complications and requires flawless coordination between surgeons, anesthesiologists, and transplant specialists.
The result? A total success.
